Too late for roses

We women have to stick together. Well, not too close together, or some fabulous single guy might think we’re not into men.

Goes a quote from some scrapbook sticker my best friend and I picked at the mall yesterday for our planner. It’s funny because it has become a yearly thing for my best girl friends and I to get together for some post-valentines day single girls night out where we enjoy great food, drinks and lots of girl talk and celebrate independence, freedom and being carefree.

B and A’s busy schedules wonderfully freed up allowing us to get together at CDO last night. We were also joined by three more fabulously single girl friends, Ate Di, Ai and Ate Mats, who all happened to be in CDO too, for dinner. So what followed was a fun single girls slash blog/twitter buddies reunion dinner at Siam, enjoying great Thai food, laughter, girl talk and snapshot moments. Fun times, fun times.

After dinner, we split up and the three of us, B, A and I headed to Cafe Macumba for some drinks and live band music. It felt like high school all over again when the bands played our favorite 90’s music. We were like our giddy high school selves, singing along to songs we knew by heart. More girl talk, more laughter.

We changed our minds about checking out a bar after we couldn’t get a proper parking space so we decided to cap off our night out with a midnight caffeine fix at Coffeeworks instead, which was a better idea because when we got there, the branch at Divisoria wasn’t packed and we got to have the place all to ourselves before the caffeine-seekers came trickling in. B loves their frappes while A and I went for their tall hot yummy concoctions.

Heading back to B’s pad, we decided to have a movie marathon but we all fell asleep before the first movie, Tangled, was over which goes to show we’re not cut out for staying up until the wee, wee morning hours anymore, haha!

We enjoyed Sunday brunch at Pancake House and had our very filling share of their yummy pancakes, waffles and the best tacos in town.

After getting our food fix, it was time for errands, a.k.a. our little shopping fix where we ended up splurging on stuff we weren’t really supposed to get but did anyway because we are each other’s biggest shopping supporters. Haha.

So goes our usual weekend get together. Time flies when you’re having fun and before you know it, it’s back to the daily grind as another busy work/school week begins.

And I wonder when the next weekend getaway will be.

Love

By the time you read this last installment for my 7-day love blogging series, I’m  probably getting ready or running late for school, or fidgeting in my seat in class hoping not to get called and grilled for a recitation, or having lunch alone in my favorite little cafe while I review for another class, or on a bus off to see my dear best friends, or already having some weekend fun with my best friends for our post-valentine celebration slash exorcising-all-the-stress-demons bonding.

I did not want to miss my blogging series finale so in view of a packed Saturday,  which clearly would not give me any time for blogging, I have written this on Friday night and scheduled for it to be posted on Saturday. Thank you, WordPress for scheduling this post. Haha.

So to end the series, I’ll round up what I loved about the past six days blogging about the things I love. Cue music, roll flashback…

I love the entire spontaneity of this blogging series. What started as an idea to blog about really beautiful, heart-melting high heels from SO! F.A.B. turned out to be a weeklong love blogging affair. Love does surprise you when you least expect it.

I love that I got to channel the sentimental dork in me. I rarely blog about sappy, schmaltzy stuff because it feels like hanging your heart out there for anyone to see, but I guess it’s okay to admit to be sentimentally dorky or dorkily sentimental sometimes.

I love that I found a way to show some love to dear blogging friends. We’re just a small bunch, but a fun bunch nonetheless. I’m proud that I have this group of amazing people that make hanging out online one of the most fun things to do.

I love being able to laugh now about how full of emotional crap I was before. Haha. I love remembering that I was so inspired I was able to write those things before that I couldn’t find in myself to write about now.

I love being able to share the things I love.

And I love how there’s more to love than we could ever imagine or think of…

Love and compression

Day 6 – I’m almost at the end of my 7-day love blogging series. Time flies fast, doesn’t it?

Today I’m featuring a new love. Well, my love for books isn’t anything new, but my love for ebooks, now that’s something new. I used to think ebooks wouldn’t be my kind of thing, after all one of my greatest joys consist of milling around bookstores, especially National Bookstore and Booksale, preferably with my best friends slash book-shopping buddies A and B, browsing through shelves and stacks of books and hoarding cheap P20 hard bound books.

While Chuck holds a small collection of ebooks, I haven’t really gotten around to reading them because I love reading books in bed (bad for the eyes, I know) and the thought of curling up with a netbook tapping the ↓ key to scroll through pages just doesn’t appeal to me. Call it a quirk but I love flipping through book pages and the smell of new books is one of my favorite scents.

Then came Kobo.

I was browsing through the Blackberry App World for new free apps to download a couple of weeks ago when I found Kobo, an ebook reader app.  I’ve tried Wattpad and Mobipocket before, but I wasn’t really drawn to them. With Kobo though, I found myself instantly hoarding free classic ebooks and storing them to the memory card for offline reading anytime, anywhere.  No more waiting impatiently in line because I have a variety of books to pick from to keep me entertained. I can enjoy reading while having lunch alone because it’s easier to scroll through the pages with my phone’s optical trackpad – no spilling soup or drinks on pages. And when I want to read a couple of pages before going to sleep, it’s easier on Kobo – no wrinkled pages, no wondering the next day what page you stopped.

I’m still starting to collect free ebooks on Kobo, free because I’m kuripot like that! And here are a few I’ve hoarded so far.

I hope I have the time to finish these classics I’ve always wanted to read. Well, except for Edmond Rostand’s Cyrano de Bergerac because I have a copy of the book and I can’t get enough reading it over and over again (one of my forever loves). Haha.

Hard bound books still remain my first love but for those times when my phone’s all I have, it’s nice to know that Jane Austen, Emily Dickinson or Edmond Rostand are just a click away – and then I’m in book heaven.

That’s the way (my love is)

Love blogging day 5. I’m still feeling a bit flustered from last night’s sentimental blogging. I guess I’m not just used to the whole letting-your-emotions-spill-out-into-your-writing thing. But then again, I kind of loved the feeling of emancipation after I clicked “Publish” and I love that it made me remember a past love: writing poetry. Although I’m not ready yet to pick up a pen and scribble precious words on bits of paper like I used to do. The inspiration eludes me.

Tonight though, let me tell you about another past love albeit lighter and more fun that has resurfaced and has filled my days with such delight,  it rocks my days.

Tonight, I love you

It’s the song title I picked for day 4 of my love blogging because it starts with “It’s a beautiful night…” During the drive home from school, I couldn’t help but notice how hauntingly beautiful the moon looked tonight that it stirred something inside, something forgotten from long ago… that slight skip of the heart, that silly smile I couldn’t wipe off, those words and thoughts coming back again.

I love the moon. Back in college, I’d stay out late on the lawn, gazing at the moon and stars, alone with my thoughts. Out under the dark star-speckled sky, there was this inexplicable serenity inside. My moon and star-gazing moments were my solace from the daily grind of college life. That was then. Looking at the moon earlier, I kind of longed for those times. I could use a lot of those moments now. But somehow, I just couldn’t find it in myself anymore to be alone under the moon with my thoughts. Who knows, maybe one night…

Tonight though, seeing the moon brought in memories of a poem I scribbled some six years back, inspired by the moon and the things it conjures up. I haven’t written poems in so long. So, here’s to remembering what was…

A glistening pearl – the moon.

Her radiance dancing on my eyelashes

beckoning tears I vowed

I never again would shed for you.

Oh if ever I were eloquent,

I would speak to her about you.

But I cower

and instead, wish that as she keeps watch

over the still night,

her light would shine in my heart

unfolding everything it holds for you.

And you,

you who have always been eloquent,

speak to her tonight…

for she has so much to tell you.

I dug up other old poems too. Oh my gawd, I was brimming with sentimental crap back then it cracks me up now. Haha.

Push out the jive, bring in the love

Day 3 of blogging on things that I love. In case you haven’t noticed, the blog titles I’ve chosen are song titles from my playlist with love in them. Love Like This by Natasha Bedingfield, Love and Despair by Wolfgang and today’s Push Out the Jive, Bring in the Love by Lostprophets.

Today, I’m bringing in the love by giving props to my dearest and coolest blogging friends in my blogroll:

Ai is toastedpeanuts at Multiply, where we first began our online blogging friendship. She now blogs Of Tangled Neurons and Depleted Cerebrospinal Fluid at Blogspot which I think is medical jargon for blogging about her medical journey and all the fun, interesting and inspiring things that come along with it. She was a younger batch from the same high school and I only knew her then as my best friend’s younger sister’s best friend. Eventually, I would come to know that this future wonder doctor is a fun-loving, spirited lady with so much zest for life who pursues her dreams with such passion. I am amazed at how she handles hospital duty stress and still manages to have fun. How does she do it? There’s only one way to find out — read her blog!

Ate Di is the blogger extraordinaire behind The Ocean of my Being. With over seven years of blogging under her belt, I remember being in awe of her and her writing when I came across her blog years before. Who is this amazing blogger from MSU who was also friends with Ala Paredes who designed her blog template? Thanks to Multiply and the fact that she and my best friends teach in the same English Department of MSU CSSH, I finally got to meet this one helluva cool woman. She exudes passion, intensity and wisdom in her writing, it just inspires you. I love that she loves pink so much, it’s so endearing but has that empowered woman’s spunk to show that she’s not your typical pink-loving girly girl.

Ate Karl is Marawi Girl. I like to think of her as the Wonder Girl in my blog roll. A wonder girl in her career, she balances teaching and administrative duties amazingly. A wonder family girl, she is a wonderful role model as a daughter, big sister, and now wife – her love story launched a thousand romantic sighs, especially among us who are “fans” of the love team that is Shaw and Karla. A wonder writer, her blog posts are filled with inspiration, especially when she shares the wisdom and lessons she has learned from her Nanay and Tatay. And I’m sure when the time comes, she’ll be wonder mom too!

I met Aya in Manila some three or four years ago during one of the MSU Alumni gatherings. Thanks to common friends, we became blogging buddies over at Multiply. Her blog, ayathought makes for one great read. Thoughtful, sincere and profound, her writing talent is impressive, like she’s beyond the other young women of her age. Whether she’s writing a review about a battery charger or a deeper exploration of emotions, her posts are such a jewel to read, striking the perfect balance between humor and profundity. I hope she updates her WordPress blog, Jatot, soon.

Bee and I go a looong way back. Best friends since high school, we’ve added blogging to the many things that we both love in common. Having gone through many blog changes (another thing we have in common), she has finally found her own Beehive at Blogspot where she chronicles the lighter side of B, serving as her solace and escape from her career which has turned her into a very busy bee. In her own beehive, she answers to no one. She is her own queen B.

What’s strange is reading Dan’s Conversations With a Stranger doesn’t feel like listening to a stranger. On the contrary, it’s kind of listening to a deeper emotional conversation that is both familiar and unique. Familiar because at one point or another, we might have had some of these conversations with ourselves too. Unique because it’s atypical to hear this from a guy’s point of view. Either way, his conversations make for great reads – and a bit of pondering.

KitsK to Success is proof that not all peer-pressure is bad for you. Finally giving in to our (B and I – but mostly B) prodding to start a blog of her own, dear best friend K has unleashed the hidden blogger in her. Heartwarming and endearing, Kits’ blog lets you in into her family life, career and friendships.  While she contemplates on achieving success, I think as a wonderful daughter, sister, wife, mother and best friend, rolled into one amazing person that is her, she has already found  the K to success.

Zahara, as she describes herself in her blog Scarlet’s Walk, is a pessimist by heart, cynic by choice. Z makes no compromises in her fashion choices. This fabulous blogger collects Toms shoes and Havaianas slippers, plans to fill her closet with Mango clothes and loves Marc Jacobs to absolute pieces. Her blog follows her new adventure to as she tries to make a mark in fashion, travel and lifestyle, among others. And in her Toms-shodden feet, I know she’ll go places.

I’d also like to make a shout-out to a new addition to my blogroll: Khal and her new blog.

Hurray for taking on the 30-day blog challenge!

Love and despair

Happy Schmalentines Day!♥

It’s day two of my love blogging series and I think I’ll add to today’s cheesy/mushy/sappy/silly/drippy/sugary/syrupy-ness by sharing and bringing back kilig or cringe-worthy (your pick) love quotes archived from an old blog post because I love sharing and well, I love that I have the perfect excuse to be silly today.

Who knows, these quotes just might find their way to your valentine cards, love notes, text messages and Facebook wall posts (again, your pick). Or you can just mull over them if you’re the contemplative type. And for the cynics and “valentheists” who don’t believe in Valentine’s Day, I’m throwing in a couple of quotes for your cynical pleasure too.

What really matters in picking your chocolate is not the sweetness but its capability of making you happy no matter how bitter it could sometimes get. You can always crave for any, but there will always be that special chocolate that’s enough for you to forget the rest.

Love doesn’t matter if you make lousy coffee or your hair is messy. Love will still kiss you even when you have colds. Love moves your seat back when you need it, reminds you to bring your hanky, smiles if you do. Love may not have time for intimate dinners or walks on the beach – you’ll sometimes make do with a night of TV shows, but love will stand by you… guide you… remind you… that you’re never alone.

The sad situation is not the discovery that my prince is committed to someone else. What’s truly pathetic is how I tried to snatch the princess role for myself… when really I am just one of the crowd watching them in the royal parade.

If you have your chance now, take it. If you want something, nothing can stop you. Don’t leave your life up to fate or destiny or whatever. It’s always your choice. Take charge. Do what you can now. Do what makes you happy. And to hell with the consequences. If you get bitten, then you’ll know it wasn’t for you. At least there won’t be any regrets or what ifs. There’s always a risk, but not taking that risk is a even bigger risk.

When you’ve found the reason to walk away, never look back. Just keep on walking, even if the destination is unclear. It will take a lot of courage for every step you make, but it will save you some pride and honor for yourself. It’s better to get lost moving on than being stranded and broken after all.

It’s an enigma when you fall in love and accept that some good things never last. Suddenly, you’ll begin to see yourself as nothing. It’s an agony to accept that despite the feelings you have, it’s all not enough. But when you love someone, you would do the hardest thing and yes, it’s not going to be easy, but at least you know that what you felt was real. In the end, you’ll ask yourself, “does it hurt?” Then you’ll close your eyes and whisper, “yes… but it may be worth it.”

A perfect partner in life is someone you can be with and talk about anything without realizing that the day is over. Someone who will always listen and feel twice the joy or pain you are going through. When you start to feel that connection, never let it go because there is more to companionship than to love only. Because in the end, when all else fails, you will always hold on to those times when you don’t even need to hear the words “I love you.”

Holding on can make us filter our love’s imperfections and preserve the image we have of him or her. But letting go takes us to another place where we learn to look at the imperfections within ourselves, accept that the image we held on to has evolved and embraced new opportunities in the horizon.

Find someone who isn’t afraid to admit that they miss you. Find someone who knows that you’re not perfect, but treats you as if you are. Someone whose biggest fear is losing you. One who gives their heart completely. Someone who says “I love you” and means it. Last but not the least, find someone you wouldn’t mind waking up with in the morning, seeing your wrinkles and gray hair but still falls in love with you all over again.

Someday, we’ll all be looking back at those days when we loved, got hurt, cried and fought. Maybe when that time comes, we’ll be laughing at our old dumb selves, realizing how stupid we were to stand up for things we knew were not really meant for us. But I guess learning takes time and mistakes make one’s journey fun. Life is what we make it. Love makes the world go round. So let’s live, love and take whatever pain it brings.

When your feelings get strong for someone, it’s always wise to stop for a while and give your heart a time to breathe. A time to use your mind to weigh the situation based on reason, not on emotion because the saddest thing that can happen is when one falls in love while the other wants nothing more than friendship. Love can sometimes be magic, but magic can sometimes be just an illusion and illusions never change into something real.

Hearts don’t really break. Nobody gets to break a heart. And no one can. Because hearts, after the wildest storms survive and will always stay intact. When you feel pain in the region of your heart, it’s not the heart that’s breaking but something else… faith. And then you stop believing.

Someday, we’ll forget the pains that caused our tears and why we cried. We would finally realize that the secret of being free is not revenge but letting things unfold in their own ways and that life is simply a blank book. After all, what matters is not the first but the last chapter which shows how well we run the race. So smile, laugh, forgive, believe and love over and over again. Keep dreaming. Keep loving.

You know it’s been sad that we just don’t recognize the significant moments of our lives while they’re happening. We grow complacent with ideas or things or people and we take them for granted. And it’s usually not until that thing is to be taken away from you that you realize how wrong you’ve been, that you realize how much you really need it, how much you really love it.

And because sharing is loving, here are some love-related quotes I found scribbled in old notes:

Do not go looking for your soul mate out there. Look inside and find your own soul mate. Embrace that wonderful being of love that you truly are, and then you will attract to your life another being, in touch with his or her own love, to walk alongside you. In this way, you will discover a higher purpose to your life and relationships and walk through this world in love. — Hot Chocolate for a Mystical Lover

I used to think life was like a jigsaw… I thought you spent your time looking for the pieces to put together and when you had them all, things made sense. But the thing is, when you get to the sky bit – the real mysteries – the colors tend to look the same. You just have to keep exploring… experimenting. Because in the end it’s not about shapes or patterns but what fits in your heart. — Wise Follies by Grace Wynne-Jones

If I do meet someone special, I hope that I’ll recognize him. Not let him slip by without at least letting him know how I feel. That kind of thing takes courage, but I think it’s worth it. — Wise Follies by Grace Wynne-Jones

After everything in our lives – after all we do or say or hope for – all that will be left finally, is love. — How to Make an American Quilt by Whitney Otto

Until one morning, I’ll wake up and find I’m thinking about something else, and then I’ll know the worst is over. My heart might be bruised, but it will recover and become capable of seeing the beauty of life once more. It’s happened before, it will happen again, I’m sure. When someone leaves, it’s because someone else is about to arrive – I’ll find love again. — The Zahir by Paulo Coelho

In this world, there is so much of what looks like love, and sounds like love, and calls itself love, but it isn’t. It’s just people saying and doing what they think they ought to say and do. — Evening

Add to the cheesiness… share those quotes you love too!

But most importantly, don’t forget to share the
